Zimazon is Zimbabwe's preferred online shop offering local products like electronics, electricals, hardware and home essentials, groceries and more. It was a forward-thinking, eCommerce platform in Zimbabwe and was initially used to import products all over Zimbabwe. The platform re-emerged with a new vision of local sourcing, logistics optimisation, and a new customer experience journey that was primarily focussed on Zimbabweans. The transformation project was designed to transition Zimazon from a traditional marketplace that relies heavily on imports to a locally-oriented, locally accessible digital commerce platform, with access available to the local population and Zimazon buyers in the diaspora. The objective was to return the platform and make it consistent with the client's sense of reliability, worth, speedy delivery and confidence in online transactions.
Zimazon sold everything from groceries to electronics and hardware to household essentials. This diversity resulted in complexity in navigating, and product discovery was difficult for users, particularly new visitors who were not familiar with the structure.
The platform served two distinct audiences. Local customers emphasized affordability, convenience, and flexible payment options, whereas diaspora customers spoke of gifting, reliability, and that their orders would arrive to Zimbabwe without problems. Balancing these expectations required structural and UX-level changes.
Logistics in Zimbabwe presented inconsistent delivery coverage, regional constraints, and variability in fulfillment speed. There was often no clear shipping logic, which led to a lack of clarity about shipping expectations and sometimes produced gaps in the shipping.
A significant portion of users required Cash on Delivery (COD) due to limited trust in online payments and varying access to digital banking systems. Supporting multiple payment methods was essential for conversion and trust-building.
Repeat purchase behavior was weak due to limited engagement mechanisms. There were few incentives to return, and the platform lacked structured loyalty and referral systems.
Zimazon's eCommerce platform was developed using nopCommerce and customized and enhanced by nopStation. Each of the above challenges was faced with targeted solutions. The outcome is a very functional platform that is scalable and has all possible features, which works well for both diaspora buyers and local Zimbabweans.
To simplify browsing across Zimazon's extensive product catalog, nopStation's Mega Menu was implemented to create a structured and intuitive navigation experience. Categories, brands, and key shopping destinations were organized into a multi-level menu, enabling customers to explore products more efficiently without excessive searching or navigation steps.
The enhanced navigation improved product discoverability, reduced browsing friction, and helped customers quickly find relevant products across Zimazon's diverse range of categories.

Advanced search functionality was implemented using intelligent indexing to improve product discovery. This enabled faster, more relevant results even in a large and inconsistent catalog environment.
Zimazon adopted nopStation's Kingdom Theme to create a modern, responsive, and user-friendly shopping experience. Features such as smart product displays, promotional sliders, quick view, and enhanced merchandising created a more engaging shopping experience and improved product presentation across the store.
The redesigned storefront delivered a faster, more intuitive customer journey while effectively supporting Zimazon's large and diverse product catalog.
To support wholesale buyers, retailers, and institutional customers, Zimazon introduced a dedicated bulk ordering capability. Customers purchasing large quantities could easily place high-volume orders through a streamlined purchasing workflow, reducing the effort required to source products across multiple transactions. The feature improved purchasing efficiency for business customers, supported quantity-based procurement needs, and enabled Zimazon to serve both B2C and B2B customer segments through a single commerce platform.

A referral program was introduced to encourage organic customer acquisition and strengthen community-driven growth. Registered users could invite friends to join the platform, and once a referred customer completed their first purchase, the referrer earned reward points that could be used toward future purchases.
The program helped incentivize repeat engagement, increased customer loyalty, and leveraged word-of-mouth marketing - particularly among diaspora customers who frequently purchased products for friends and family in Zimbabwe.

A save-for-later and wishlist feature was implemented, allowing users to curate products over time and return when ready to purchase. This supported longer purchase cycles typical in household and hardware categories.
Geo-based shipping restrictions were implemented to limit order delivery to the Harare region only. This ensured customers outside the service area could not place orders, improving fulfillment accuracy and preventing unsupported deliveries.
The transformation of Zimazon delivered measurable improvements across product discovery, customer engagement, operational efficiency, and overall user experience.
The success of the Zimazon transformation was driven not by a single feature, but by the combined impact of multiple improvements working together. Enhanced product discovery simplified shopping, the redesigned storefront improved engagement, loyalty features encouraged repeat purchases, and geo-based shipping rules increased fulfillment reliability.
Together, these enhancements transformed Zimazon into a more structured, efficient, and customer-centric digital marketplace for both local and diaspora shoppers.
